We heard from AccuRadio’s Founder/CEO, Kurt Hanson today, responding to yesterday's post. He called to remind us of Ando Media’s switch from Arbitron’s five minute rule to a one minute rule last September.
We first wrote about the change last November here, and more recently here. We should have noted that the change impacted numbers beginning in September 2009. You’ll note in the post’s graph that TSL and average starts both dropped when the rule was changed.
Kurt makes the point that correcting for the the rule change, AccuRadio actually gained, not lost audience in subsequent months.
Kurt was kind enough to back up the claim by providing a graph of AccuRadio’s global AQH going back to January 2008 using consistent methodology. We’ve reproduced it here.
AccuRadio grew rapidly throughout 2008, and showed year over year growth for every month of 2009. So far this year the service is again pacing ahead of last year, up 14% in the first four months.
The graph does a great job of making our case that AccuRadio is a good canary. A long documented performance will tell us a great deal about Internet radio’s future.
With AccuRadio’s help, we hope to continue to update the service’s performance over the coming months.
